My version of the ‘Aquaglobe’

Well, I’m a sucker for infomercials and I think the aquaglobe looks like a great product.  It makes sense, but I don’t know if I want to pay money for it.  SO – I decided to make my own aquaglobe!  I’m using a Dawn Foam dish soap bottle, a mini play-doh container and the tube part of an old pen.

First, clean the parts you’ll use – I use Goo Gone to get the stickers off stuff – it’s awesome.

Then there is a small circle on the bottom of the playdoh container.  I used an exacto knife to cut it out and the pen actually screwed into the hole I cut.  The tighter the fit the better – it’s going to have to be air/water tight!

Then you’ll need caulk – Apply around the pen on the inside and outside of the playdoh container.  Then apply to the bottom inside curve of the playdoh container and to the bottom outside of the dawn bottle.  Apply liberally – it has to be air/water tight!

Fill with water and place in plant.  Push into the soil until the playdoh container is touching the soil.  I’ll let you know how it works!  I’m putting mine into my plant today!

Kleenex Box Craft

You need:

1 Kleenex Box

part of a pizza box

construction paper

glue

glitter

felt shapes

paint

markers etc

First cover the sides and bottom of the Kleenex box with construction paper.  Then cut the side of a pizza box to make the lid for the box.

I duct taped the lid on and covered it with construction paper.  Then let your child do the rest.  Color, paint, glitter, glue etc.  I’m not sure what we’re going to use this box for…maybe to keep other crafts we’ve made.  I plan on Modge Podge-ing the glitter so we don’t end up with everything we own getting glittery.  She loved this project and it took several days to finish.  We’d work on it one day, do something else the next, then go back to it, until it was done.

Hand/Foot Print Butterfly

This was really easy, fast, and it makes a really cute gift if you frame it!

You need:

non-toxic paint (acrylic/tempera)

paper

paintbrush

your child’s picture

I put 3 different color paints on a plate.  Then I folded the paper in half lengthwise and opened it (so I would know where to put the hand/foot prints).  I strapped her into her booster seat so we didn’t have to deal with paint all over the floor.  Dipped her foot in the paint and pressed onto the paper.  I used a shoebox as a hard surface so the prints would look nice and clean.  Repeat with other foot and hands.  Then I painted the body and the date we did it.  I also outlined the ‘wings’ so it looked more like a butterfly.  Last cut out a picture of your child’s face and glue onto the head.  It turned out great because her thumbprints look like antennae!  We did one like this last year with handprints for flower petals and footprints for leaves – we put the picture as the center of the flower and framed it.  We gave them to grandparents as part of their Christmas gifts.

Swivel Sweeper

I bought the swivel sweeper at Walgreens this week, it was on sale for 30$ and I bought 5 other things that were less than 1$ and used my RR to pay for it.  I think I paid 6.25 or something like that.  Anyway…

I LOVE IT!  There isn’t any suction, just the rotating brushes that put all the stuff into a dust pan that empties very easily into the trash.  It’s cordless and has a small rechargable battery pack.  It’s perfect for running over the carpet in between the days I actually have time to vacuum – or when someone calls and is on the way to your house and there are cheerios, goldfish, and/or dog food all over the carpet!  It also picks up quite a bit of animal hair!  I used it on my bathroom floors and it worked pretty well, but does better on the carpet.  I am so excited to have it!  It would make an awesome gift, especially for a gift exchange or secret santa/pal etc.

Bandana Quilt

I finally finished my nephew’s quilt!  He was supposed to get it when he was born, but I finished it in time for his 1st birthday.  Not bad, considering I have 2 kids!  I just sewed 6 bandanas together, hand quilted his name thru the batting (not thru the back since I didn’t want his name to be backward), then appliqued the stars thru the batting and backed it with a twin sheet cut to size.  I put buttons thru to hold the back on, but wish I’d quilted the squares on the bandanas thru the back since the batting balled up in the corners when I washed it!  Doh!  You live, you learn.  Here’s how it turned out!

Elmo Cake!

My daughter had her birthday party with her cousin this weekend.  She turned 2 and he turned 1.  It was such a good time!  My SIL and I made the kids cakes.  I took the Wilton cake class at Hobby Lobby (for 15$ – and I only went to the first 2 classes, but I learned 15$ worth for sure) so I used my knowledge and supplies from that to make it.  Lacee is just really talented…she’s an artist. She made a blue cake with clouds and an airplane on top.  I made an Elmo cake.  I only have a picture of mine, but I’ll post hers on here later if she wants to.  Ta Da!

Here are some of the rocks we found while we were in NC on vacation this summer.  The first is a picture of my mom’s staurolite (aka fairy crosses).  The next two pictures are of some pretty jasper that is my mom’s.  I’ll have to take a picture of my fairy crosses to put on here.

This Walgreens Diaper deal saved me TONS of money!

If you figure what I actually paid vs. what I normally pay -

96 packages of Diapers

Paid 144.00- 4.50 for each transaction (including tax)

Normally (for brand name same size) – 720$!!!  And that is if they’re on sale (7.50 each) NOT including tax!!!

I bought diapers for my nephew, my son and daughter, and for my future nephew or neice!  I’ll probably end up keeping about 70 packs for us.  Now I have to figure out what all I want to buy with my OODLES of Register Rewards!!!

My Project

My daughter has a foam chair  that she sits in ALL the time.  The cover of it was ripping at the seams and stained pretty badly, so I decided to recover it.  I used some fabric that I got at an estate sale for .25, some waterproof lap pads/changing pads, and a table cloth that Will bought to make a curtain (he bought 2 and we ended up only needing one) – so I spent nothing (since last year when we bought the fabrics) on this project!

I couldn’t do this again the same way in 100 years – but this is kind of how I went about it -

First I measured all dimensions of the chair.  I drew diagrams and labeled them with the measurements.  Then I drew out how I was going to cut the fabric and figured out measurements for the pieces.  I cut the seat (flowered) in one piece and then cut the lap pad to fit (with 1/2 in of fabric on each side – to sew to the brown).  I sewed the lap pad in then started with the foot rest panels.  I worked my way around the chair and with a LOT of referring back to the chair and remeasuring etc, this is what happened!

To hold the cover on, I measured an extra 6 inches on the bottom then folded over about 3 inches and made a hem about 1 1/2 in from the edge.  Then I folded the hem right on the seam and made another hem about 1/4 in from the inside edge.  I threaded elastic thru the hem and tied it together with a few knots then sewed the hem closed and, Voila!  I couldn’t believe there were no major mishaps!  My daughter LOVES it – she said it was pretty!  I still have to finish the cushion, but I don’t know when that’ll be because I have to get out and buy a zipper first.
